(TOKYO)POP GOES MY HEART!

So, Tokyopop (the publisher of a little book called GYAKUSHU!) has been in the nerd news lately in a less than flattering light. You can go read about that elsewhere, but what it means for me is that Volume3 of GYAKUSHU!, which I'm half done with now...

...will initially be released online.

(AUDIENCE GROAN)

No, it's not a good thing, but not really worth crying over. There have been some other things going on with the book, so it's very possible that we'll see it at some point, in a better format. Save your tears, I have no use for them (unless you had none, in which case, you are heartless, sir/madam!).

My heart goes out to all the other creators affected by the changes at Tokyopop. I'm still grateful for the opportunities I've had and the connections I've made through this book (which isn't over anyway, so seriously, stop crying!). I've been to the other side of the world because of this book, and seen it printed in Italian and Russian (so far). The Thief is not dead.

(EDIT: This picture is the actual cover to Volume3, it's just entertainingly symbolic given the circumstances. YOU CAN'T KEEP THE THIEF DOWN!!!)

Anyone wishing to give or receive supportive HIGH FIVES can do so at Comic-Con. I'll have a piece of a table at the IMAGE COMICS booth, where I'll be selling GYAKUSHU! pages for the first time. Seriously, I've been holding on to all of them, so if you have a specific page you MUST have (and there TOTALLY should be at least one) then you might want to email me and make sure I hold on to it or bring it. More on all that soon. Everyone enjoy their week!

NO, WAIT! "AJB:VOL1-HERE COME THE SPIDERS!" is officially out now. It looks obscenely good! I'm so happy with how it came out, it looks and reads SO well. You know what this calls for, don't you? LINK PARTY!!!

-AWESOMETOWN AJB INTERVIEW WITH MATT BRADY!
-RADVILLE AJB INTERVIEW AT AINTITCOOLNEWS!
-AJB VIRAL MARKETING(kindof)!
-WHAT'S THIS?! A GYAKUSHU! VOLUME2 REVIEW!
-AND NOT QUITE A REVIEW, BUT PROBABLY THE COOLEST COMMENTARY I'VE SEEN ON GYAKUSHU!

YEAH!!! LINK PARTY!!! Now back to work...

It'll still be a book right- I can put it on my bookshelf next to the other two? Not something I have to read online- those nasty turn the digital page things....right?

ANONYMOUSVOICE: No, unfortunately it means (at least for now) it will just be online. That said, I think a lot of possibilities to see it in print are going to pop up once this all gets sorted out, so stay tuned!

BEN: Thanks so much! You are AWESOME, sir!

IAN: Thanks! I'll get down to Australia eventually. I mean, if for no other reason than it'd be a good place to weather the great zombie apocalypse, you know? Hopefully sooner than that though:)

SCOTT: Yeah, they've lost both rad, cool and majestic points, but we'll see what the future brings. THANKS for the support!

...and thanks to anyone reading this blog. I pretty much assume it's about ten people, so thanks to you other six:)

Hi Dan! Glad you appreciated my commentary. I really enjoyed the first two volumes of Gyakushu!, and they made me think, as you can probably tell.

It's a shame Gyakushu! is going web-only -- I'd prefer a print edition, though as long as I can get my grubby little mitts on volume 3, I'll be somewhat satisfied. It's a shame Tokyopop's reshuffling in such a dramatic manner with so many OEL books in mid-flow.

All of a sudden I love being Italian... and your publisher, to boot. Anybody wants Gyak printed-the-way-it-was-meant-to-be, just one word to the wise: knowing "The Sopranos" by heart won't help you read the word balloons. :-P
Hang in there, buddy.

KATHERINE: YEAH! Thanks so much for writing that up, it really was a fantastic read. You pretty much nailed what I was going for with the narrative, which was super-gratifying to see. I hope Volume3 gives you a satisfying finish!

CHAD: Awesome, yeah, I'll definitely email you!

MICHELE: Indeed, HIGH FIVES to RENOIR, one of the finest publishers I know! Thanks for the support, you guys have been incredible!

Everyone enjoy their week!

That's not RAd at all. I hope to see Vol. 3 in print form. I'll console myself with the new AJB Vol. 1.

Well, that's a little not cool. See, I work at a comic shop in Austin TX, and the thing is, people love your stuff. And everyone kinda loves your stuff in print. My manager is upset about what's happening at TokyoPop, because there are a couple of OEL mangas that were created by locals whose final volumes might not make it to print. We hope for the best for you, though~! You stuff really is boss.

DAN HIPP said...

Thanks, Adrian!

ROSSI: THANKS for the kind words! I'm still pretty optimistic about the whole thing, so we'll see what happens. I do think we will see it in print at some point.

Hey, Dan. Any thought as to how you will present book 3 online? Weekly or Monthly installments of PDFs would be a good idea if you wanted printing restrictions.

I suppose TP would be cool with letting you make a profit from book 3 somehow, but the way they've been changing things lately, who knows what you can get away with.

Oh well, man. Sad news, this all is, but keep doing what you're doing because your work is always astounding.

DAN HIPP said...

THANKS, Raff!

Yeah, I'm not sure how they're going to want to present it yet. I still think there are a lot of variables up in the air, so I'm going to wait and see. I'm not holding my breath, but the answers will come eventually.

Thanks again, everyone!

Hey Dan! I was wondering what was going on, so I came out to your blog to check things out!

Is there anyway we can sign up for notifications when G!3 hits?

Thanks man! You are incredible!
